Although Brazil has significant agricultural production, supplying domestic consumption and yet much of the world''s grain exports, 72% of its land use are intended to pasture. This paper aimed at analyzing the climatic factors related to the distribution of pasturelands in the country, based on data from the Brazilian Estatistical Agency (IBGE) agricultural census for the years 2006 and 2007 and data from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission satellite (TRMM). It was identified that the cultivated pastures predominate where annual rainfall extends for at least eight months, with peaks above 200 mm. On the other hand, the natural pastures tend to concentrate where the rains are constant during the year or prevents soil moisture loss and water stress, or even where rainfall does not guarantee the eight rainy months and insolation is too much. Our results confirm the importance of using orbital meteorological data in support of cattle ranching studies, in view of the growing concern brought by degraded pastures, low cattle stocking and deforestation fronts induced by livestock expansion.
